The United Nations is a major international organization with 193 member countries. In six months of national independence, Uzbekistan acceded to this institution as a full-fledged member on 2 March 1992. Cooperation has been advancing consistently in the name of consolidating the peace and security, boosting healthcare, in environmental issues, education, culture, tourism and other realms.

The consulate handles almost all usual consular services: protection of interests of Uzbekistan nationals in the USA, issuance of visas, passports, authentication of documents for legal effect in Uzbekistan, notarization and registration of birth, death, marriage and divorce, etc. Trade and commercial inquiries can also be addressed to the Consulate General. The consular district of Uzbekistan Consulate General in New York City includes the following states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virgin Island, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming as well as Mexico.

The United States of America was among the first countries to recognize the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The diplomatic relations were established on February 19, 1992, and the first Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the United States of America opened in February, 1993.
